WHY LONG COAT CHIHUAHUA?
They are calm and less nervous then smooth coats, and get along with other
dogs and children a little better. All Chihuahuas when first around children that they do not know, will take their time to get to know them, but once they feel safe they are fine. Their coats are very easy to manage and come in many colors and combinations.
Not all of Long Coat Chihuahuas, come from many generations of breeding. The long coat was first developed around 1920. The long coat gene is recessive, so yes you can get both Long and Smooth coats in the same litter.
Long Coated Chihuahuas can take a little time to get their full coats, sometimes up to 14-24 months of age. The texture of the coat is soft and can be either flat or slightly curly with or without a undercoat. Most males have a larger ruff around the neck and more hair than the females. Also sometimes their ears are heavier and have a harder time standing up. Some of the heavy ear will flop over on the tips, but they can hold them up at will, and other heavy ears can be upright all the time. All of the paper thin ears have no trouble standing up. You can not breed specific for the upright ears.
They are a breed with an average size for Chihuahuas. A 4 to 6 lb. dog is small but yet large enough not to break a leg jumping off the couch. A Chihuahua can be up to 6 - 8 lbs. and this is still a very small dog. When you can hold 5 in your lap... that's small. Yes, we will have a very small pup from time to time, the so called "tea cup" but we do not breed for these small pups. Please Note: You can buy a "tea cup" but NO ONE can say for sure that it will stay a tea cup. a Runt can still grow up to be a 5 lb Chihuahua, and then it could stay tiny too. It is rare to find a 2 pound or under fully grown Chihuahua. People are asked all the time for the extremely small size pups. Really a very small Chihuahua is 4 lbs and under.
Two five pound parents can have 2 to 4 lbs grown pups. Also two 4 lb parents can throw a 6 lb grown pup. Then again two 6 lb parents can give you that so called tea cup puppy. Breeding Chihuahuas is a challenge and rewarding process. We will never breed a to SMALL female because she can have large pups. Many breeders that only want the tiny 2 to 3 lb grown dogs (tea cups) are breeding the smaller females. We will not risk their lives. Many times they will try to carry that larger puppy to term, But will need a “C” section for whelping or the growing pup can KILL the mother before she is ready. There insides are to small to carry to term. And we will NOT risk a dogs life so the public can have another 2 -3 lb dog. They also often us “INBREEDING” or “IN-LINE BREEDING” of these small pups. This will cause health problems for the pups.
Our pups are a part of our family and the very fast growing family with members all over the world. We want our pups to live long, healthy,& happy lives with their new families.
